The type of equipment that is eligible for the Smart Thermostat Program depends on the type of service you receive from Consumers Energy (electricity, natural gas, or both). Most combined heating/cooling systems are eligible. A full explanation of the eligibility requirements according to fuel type is below:

• Customers who receive electric service from Consumers Energy are eligible for the summer season if they have a central air conditioner controlled by an eligible smart thermostat. Customers with electric service only (and not gas service) from Consumers Energy are not eligible for the winter season.

• Customers who receive natural gas service from Consumers Energy are eligible for the winter season if they have a gas furnace controlled by an eligible smart thermostat. Customers who receive only natural gas service (and not electricity) from Consumers Energy are not eligible for the summer season.

• Customers who receive both electric and natural gas service from Consumers Energy must have, at minimum, a gas furnace or an electric central air conditioner, controlled by an eligible smart thermostat. Customers with a central air conditioner will participate in the summer season, those with a gas furnace will participate in the winter season, and those with both are eligible to participate in both seasons.

Ineligible equipment includes:

• Single stage heat pumps
• Oil/propane furnaces
• Electric furnaces
• Boilers/radiants
• Line voltage systems (generally 110V/220V baseboard heating)
• Multistage heat pumps

Important message about buying a smart thermostat on the Consumers Energy Store

If you purchase an eligible thermostat on the Consumers Energy Store and opt to receive an enrollment bonus (by joining the Smart Thermostat Program), you must meet the equipment eligibility requirements listed above. Once your new thermostat is installed, the thermostat will verify your equipment type. If your equipment is determined ineligible based on the rules above, your credit card will be charged back the cost of the enrollment bonus.
